Activating Azolla Ponds for Sustainable Agriculture and Learning

On November 16, 2024, Subang - Cebu Technological University Chapter activated new Azolla ponds at the CTU-Barili Campus to support the cultivation and study of Azolla pinnata, a fast-growing aquatic fern with applications in sustainable agriculture.

The initiative was made possible through the reuse of ponds previously used by fourth-year Bachelor of Science in Agriculture major in Horticulture students. Their support allowed the existing facilities to be repurposed for continued agricultural learning and experimentation.

Azolla is commonly studied for its association with nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria and its potential applications as a biological fertilizer and supplemental feed resource. Its cultivation can therefore provide opportunities for exploring lower-cost and resource-efficient agricultural practices.

Beyond cultivation, the newly activated ponds provide a potential platform for research, education, and practical agricultural training within the campus. The initiative reflects Subang - CTU's interest in connecting environmental stewardship, agricultural innovation, and accessible community-based solutions.
