It's Not About What You Give, But Why You Give

Dennis B. Bendulo, a BS Agriculture student specializing in Agronomy, became the sole recipient of the Gawad Subang award, a recognition that reflects not only his work as a volunteer but also the experiences that shaped his commitment to service.

His journey began long before he became involved in Subang. As a young student, Dennis found ways to support himself and his education, selling Frutos candies in elementary school and bibingka in high school. By Grade 9, he was already a working student. After senior high school, uncertainty about whether he could continue to college was eased when a cousin and teacher offered him an opportunity to study while working.

His parents and grandmother remained important sources of inspiration as he pursued agriculture. College brought its own challenges, including periods when friends helped him with food and other needs. Along the way, mentors such as Dr. Clea Anne V. Corsiga, whom he admired for her work in Soil Science, and Dr. Danny E. Carabio helped nurture his potential.

Dennis initially had little interest in joining a student organization. That changed when he was invited by Kuya Rodney Sundo, then Subang Environmental Affairs Vice President. He eventually joined because of the organization's culture of volunteerism and its emphasis on contributing to communities without expecting something in return.

His experience in agriculture also shaped his perspective on service. He often returns to the idea that people should look at what is most needed and respond accordingly. For agriculture students, he encourages them to recognize the importance of their field and the role agriculturists play in sustaining food production.

Dennis' story offers a simple reflection on volunteerism: service is not always measured by the amount of resources a person can give. Sometimes, what matters most is the willingness to show up, take responsibility, and contribute where one is called to serve.
